NECO Alum and Faculty, Dr. Eli Peli ’83, Ranked Number One in US Optometric Research

Dr. Eli Peli ‘83, a NECO alumnus and adjunct faculty member, has been ranked #1 researcher in the United States and #4 world-wide in a recently published global optometrist ranking (Nichols et al, Clinical and Experimental Optometry, 2022, 105, 20-25). Dr. Peli (Dr. Peli's headshot courtesy of pelilab.partners.org) is a leading expert in vision rehabilitation research and was the first to propose and test the use of computerized image enhancement as a visual aid. He has developed numerous aids that are used around the world. His research also includes eye movement analysis, binocular vision, image processing, image communications and optics.

Additionally, Dr. Peli is a consultant to many companies in the ophthalmic instrumentation area and to manufacturers of head-mounted displays. He served as a consultant on many national committees, including the National Institutes of Health and NASA Aviation Operations Systems Advisory Committee, US Air Force, Department of Veterans Affairs, and US Department of Transportation: Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration.

Dr. Peli has published more than 240 peer reviewed scientific journal papers and has been awarded 21 US Patents. Of these 21 patents, six were licensed, reduced to practice, and were brought to market. He also edited a book entitled Visual Models for Target Detection with special emphasis on military applications and co-authored a book entitled Driving with Confidence: A Practical Guide to Driving with Low Vision (coauthored with Doron Peli).
