ASCO and UAB Faculty Participate in the
Summer Health Professions Education Program Webinar Series

On September 16, ASCO staff and University of Alabama-Birmingham School of Optometry (UABSO) faculty highlighted the career of optometry as part of the Summer Health Professions Education Program (SHPEP) year round webinar series.

The webinar titled, “Find your Charge Through a Career in Optometry,” includes five faculty members from UABSO who showcased how optometry is a stimulating and rewarding career and also highlighted the various types of practice modalities such as private practice, military and academia. The last part of the webinar was dedicated to general admissions information about applying to optometry school.

The SHPEP (https://www.shpep.org/) is a free summer enrichment program focused on improving access to information and resources for college students interested in the health professions. SHPEP’s goal is to strengthen the academic proficiency and career development of students underrepresented in the health professions and to prepare them for a successful application and matriculation to health professions schools. These students include, but are not limited to, individuals who identify as African American/Black, American Indian and Alaska Native, Hispanic/Latino, and those who are from communities of socioeconomic and educational disadvantage.

ASCO is proud to have the University of Alabama-Birmingham School of Optometry and Western University of Health Sciences College of Optometry participate as part of the 12 university program sites.

The Optometry webinar can be accessed through ASCO’s YouTube Channel

ASCO would like to thank UAB faculty Drs. Janene Sims, Alexia Vaughn, Keshia Elder, Keisha Brown and Gerald Simon for their participation.
