ICO Offering Virtual Continuing Education Courses This Fall

Illinois College of Optometry’s Continuing Education Program will be offering 12 hours of live online CE during the weekend of October 30, 2020. ICO will be covering topics ranging from what is known about coronavirus so far, taught by two infections disease specialists to topics on urgent care, telemedicine, contact lens fittings, neuro-optometry and glaucoma from doctors at ICO and NOVA.

WHO IS SPEAKING?

ICO has invited two epidemiologists from RUSH University Medical College who are conducting ground-breaking research on the spread of Coronavirus. Dr. Shivanjali Shankaran is Director of Inpatient Services, Associate Program Director for Fellowship program and lead investigator for Remdesivir trial at RUMC. Dr. Sarah Won is Medical Director of Antimicrobial Stewardship Program and lead physician for RUMC COVID-19 treatment guidelines.

The Service Chief of Illinois Eye Institute’s Cornea Center is Dr. Jennifer Harthan. She will be presenting with Dr. Stephanie Fromstien, ICO’s Cornea and Contact Lens residency coordinator and Dr. Lindsay Sicks, attending optometrist for ICO’s Contact Lens and Primary Care, providing didactic training to third and fourth year students. Dr. Michael Chaglasian is the Illinois Eye Institute’s Chief of Staff and will be discussing the topic of urgent care. He will be joined by ICO’s clinical optometrist Dr. Christina Morettin.

Also presenting will be optometrists Dr. Joseph Sowka and Dr. Lori Vollmer. Dr. Sowka is currently Professor of Optometry at Nova Southeastern University College of Optometry where he serves as Chief of the Advanced Care Center and Director of the General Glaucoma Service. He has authored several refereed journal publications and textbook chapters as well as a founding member of two optometric societies where he also serves as Executive Board member. Dr. Vollmer is currently Associate Professor of Optometry and Director of Residency Programs for all optometric residency programs affiliated with Nova Southeastern University. She is also an attending optometric physician for the primary care clinic at The Eye Institute in Broward County and serves the field of optometry with participation in several optometric societies.
