Number of Applicants Who Participated in ORMatch Decreased from Previous Year
The results of ORMatch 2025 were released on March 4. The Optometry Residents Match program (ORMatch) matches students and optometry residency programs based on a mutual ranking algorithm. Established by ASCO, ORMatch has been in operation since 2013.
Compared to the previous year’s match, ORMatch experienced a 15% decrease this year in applicants who participated in the match. Of the applicants who participated, 81% matched with an optometry residency program. Matched applicants submitted 4.8 applications each.
ORMatch had 280 optometry residency sites participating with 523 positions being offered. Sixty-two percent of the positions were filled in this year’s match.
ORMatch does have a post-match process where registered applicants who did not obtain a position are able to send applications to programs with available positions. Programs are free to accept any applicant who did not obtain a position through ORMatch, including applicants who did not register for ORMatch.
