ASCO Sees a Decrease in Applicants in the 2023 ORMatch Results

The results of ORMatch 2023 were released March 27. ORMatch matches the student and the optometry residency program based on a mutual ranking algorithm. ORMatch has been in operation since 2013.

Compared to last year’s match, ORMatch indicated a 22% decrease this year in applicants who participated in the match. Of the applicants who participated, 78% matched with an optometry residency program. Matched applicants submitted on average 4.9 applications each.

ORMatch had 286 optometry residency sites participating with 526 positions being offered. Sixty-one percent of the positions were filled in this year’s match.

ORMatch does have a post-match process where registered applicants who did not obtain a position are able to send applications to programs with available positions. Programs are free to accept any applicant who did not obtain a position in ORMatch, including applicants who did not register for ORMatch.

For more detailed statistics, please check out the statistics section of the ORMatch website.
