Number of Applicants Who Participated in ORMatch Increases from Previous Year

The results of ORMatch 2020 were released on March 16. ORMatch matches the student and the optometry residency program based on a mutual ranking algorithm. ORMatch has been in operation since 2013 after being established by ASCO.

Compared to the previous match, ORMatch experienced a 3% increase this year in applicants who participated in the match. Of the applicants who participated, 77% matched with an optometry residency program. This was the highest match percentage since ORMatch began. Matched applicants submitted 4.6 applications each.

ORMatch had 258 optometry residency sites participating with 485 positions being offered. Seventy-nine percent of the positions were filled in this year’s match.

ORMatch does have a post-match process where registered applicants who did not obtain a position are able to send applications to programs with available positions using the online ORMatch Application Service. Programs are free to accept any applicant who did not obtain a position in ORMatch, including applicants who did not register for ORMatch.

For more detailed statistics, please check out the statistics section of the ORMatch website.
