SUNY Optometry Names New Chief of Pediatrics for University Eye Center
Dr. Deborah Amster will begin as chief of the pediatric service at SUNY Optometry’s University Eye Center on August 15.
Dr. Amster is an alumna of the New England College of Optometry and completed a residency in pediatrics and binocular vision at Nova Southeastern University’s College of Optometry (NSU). She joined the NSU faculty after her residency and has been an active member of their community for 16 years.
She has served as a preceptor of first-, third- and fourth-year students and residents in clinic and laboratory settings and an instructor of record, instructor and guest lecturer for didactic and laboratory courses. She also chaired NSU’s quality assurance committee and has been actively involved in research projects, including the Pediatric Eye Disease Investigator Group and the Convergence Insufficiency Treatment Trial.
Dr. Amster has authored book chapters, coauthored scientific papers in peer-reviewed journals and presented numerous posters and lectures. She is a fellow of the American Academy of Optometry and the College of Optometrists in Vision Development (COVD). She serves on COVD’s international examination and certification board and has co-chaired national committees. She is also a member of the American Optometric Association and the Florida and Broward County Optometric Associations.
