Nursing shortages and high rates of turnover are documented problems that negatively affect patient care and institutional costs. During a session for the inaugural ONS Bridge™ virtual conference, Christopher Brooks, MS, RN, CENP, AOCNS®, director of nursing professional development and education at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center outlined philosophies and programs his institution uses to recruit and retain its nursing workforce.

 
The nursing profession is all about positively impacting the lives of the patients, and there are many ways that a nurse can have a positive impact in their workplace environment, as well. There are four key areas of influence that a nurse has in the workplace.
 
If someone you work with is using sexual language or has sexually suggestive pictures or objects at work or has engaged in threats, touching or physical assaults – these also may create an illegal hostile work environment.
