During this past weekend, we all paused from our work lives and celebrated Canada Day. It is a wonderful day of recognition that we, as an entire country, celebrate Canada’s birthday. Or more succinctly, the celebration, commencing in 1867, of when Canada started its pursuit of full sovereignty and came together as a fully unified country.

Throughout this weekend, and amidst all of the family time and barbequing that was taking place, I reflected as to what Canada Day means to me and how I associate this day, and this country, with jobs in the construction sectors.

Related project delays can translate into increased costs in labour and materials and can also drive up financing costs from lenders to finish the project, heavily impacting developers’ bottom lines. The reality is that water damage during the construction stage of a building is one of the largest risks to completing a project on time and on budget.

Safety
This year, the LOC has launched a campaign on ‘Building and Measuring Your Safety Culture using the Safety Climate Assessment Tool (S-CAT)’ to promote and advance safety culture with its members and also build industry awareness. A strong safety culture to a core value for LOC members and this program will support building more effective programs.

This guide will assist businesses in measuring their organizational health and safety climate with the Safety Climate Assessment tool (S-CAT), highlighting how the S-CAT aligns with the Workplace Safety and Insurance Board (WSIB)'s Health and Safety Excellence program. Moreover, using the S-CAT as a leading indicator of a business's health and safety program can be a compelling piece of evidence during WSIB validation of Excellence program topics.

There’s no way around it: construction has not always been perceived as the sexiest industry. But lately, it's been struggling more than ever to appeal to new talent. Fortunately, companies integrating technology into their business are not only finding an increase in productivity, but are also recruiting more effectively from the talent pool.
