Thoughtfulness to Reducing Mental Stress

When you have a task that you don’t enjoy or that causes you to feel stress, you can reduce or prevent bad feelings by thinking ahead. Prepare yourself by understanding that it has to be done and is necessary. Once you understand this, don’t anticipate problems even if the task has caused problems in the past.

Realise that you have two choices:

  1. Getting angry in anticipation of a problem that may not occur and feeling upset even before you start.
  2. Calmly accepting that it needs to be done and feeling peaceful before and possibly even during the task.

Depending on the task, it might take more or less mental preparation, but it is well worth the effort to try.

At the least, you may be able to avoid feeling upset before you perform the task.

At best, with practice, it may give you a new perspective on how to deal with unpleasant tasks in your life and reduce your stress levels.
