Message from the Board

We had all hoped that the pandemic would be easing up by now. However, so far it looks like we will all be called upon to continue running in overdrive as the creative, flexible, and resourceful association executives that we have all proven to be since March 2020. Being in overdrive is pure stress and everyone reading this knows what I mean.

Since 1980, FHFG has been helping their clients build, preserve and conserve their assets and pursue their financial goals. Throughout the decades, the role they play in their clients’ lives has changed and shifted, but they have always been a source of respected guidance and advice. Whether a client is concerned about retirement, education, or estate planning, they’ve got them covered. They are a family-run firm working for you.

At the helm is long time NYSAE member, CEO Nat Perlmutter, who founded the firm. A multi-generational business, Nat works side by side with his daughter Andie, COO, son David, Managing Partner and the addition of Amy Salo, Managing Partner in 2021. Diane Neustadt, Director of Operations, joined NYSAE’s membership engagement committee and has been extremely active. Their team has family ties through and through. Many of the firm’s financial advisors also work alongside their sons and daughters to provide multi-generational advice and caring, with an articulated sense of family vision, values and goals. With a constant quest for growth through excellence, FHFG continues to provide an ever-widening array of services under the guidance of specialists in insurance, investments and comprehensive planning.

Ask the Expert

Q. Our association leadership has committed to develop new DEI strategies for 2022 and has put a new task ‎group into place. I’m now being asked to provide strategic counsel on what they realistically should be ‎accomplishing in their first year. I’m just not sure, as their executive director, I have the knowledge on ‎how to direct them and we don’t have a big budget for me to begin recommending consultants. Next ‎steps?

A. What does “committed” really mean with leadership, and does it mean something different for DE&I than it does for other strategies they set for next year? Wanting to focus on it, or deeply feeling supportive isn’t the same as making a commitment. If they committed to a digital transformation strategy (with new website, app, AMS integrations, etc.) they’d allocate time and money to advance the related tactics. They would not expect member volunteers to have the knowledge or resources to do these things for the org or industry. DE&I strategy is like any other in this way and focusing only on feelings and conversation will not result in outcomes (and can actually backfire on the org or cause harm to communities who are already navigating exclusion/discrimination).

The association industry is reeling from the impact of the global pandemic, social injustice, the great resignation, and fundamental shifts in business models, industries, and value propositions. Today, and in the future, the association workforce deserves — and increasingly demands — inclusive leadership. The lure of superficial perks to attract and retain top talent are giving way to more meaningful social priorities like equity, belonging, wellness, and justice. Executive womxn in the C-suite are taking note and leading from the front.

Evidence shows most employees value leaders who speak up on social issues, and increasingly look for inclusive leaders who advance diversity, equity, access, and belonging internally and within the industries they serve when deciding where to work. The language we use, from interviews to board meetings to job descriptions, is deeply intertwined with our success. But, maybe fear of saying the wrong things has prevented you from fully engaging in this work? Let’s explore language and DEI together in a safe, interactive community designed for executive womxn leading in associations and nonprofits.
