Message from the Chair

If we learned anything this year about running our organizations in the midst of chaos, it is the value and vitality of the volunteers that helped us survive these uncertain times.  This is true with our own associations and certainly true for NYSAE.

This past year, in particular, we found that association volunteers with experience and business instinct were irreplaceable. They helped us power through never ending challenges and created relevant and enticing virtual events for our members.  They sparked creativity and forced us to think out of the box.  Most importantly, they helped identify the cliffs on the road ahead and ways to extinguish the fires they have already lived through in their own associations.

In a rapidly changing world, it is crucial for associations to look for new ways to not only attract and retain members, but to also generate non-dues revenue. For many associations, having a solid continuing education (CE) program has proven to be one of the most effective ways to meet these needs.

Q. Re: in-person events. We want to have an idea what the industry standards are for who should be required to ask attendees to keep their masks on and other CDC rules. Should it be the association staff or the staff of the event space? Any input would be greatly appreciated.
News for New York Associations
On May 7, a two-and-a-half-hour joyful event, CLEAR Connects: A Day of Families, was hosted by Tony Award winner Neil Patrick Harris and included performances by SiriusXM host Seth Rudetsky, Beetlejuice’s Kerry Butler and Hamilton’s Mandy Gonzalez. For the event, 24 families were reunited (all including seniors) outdoors at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey for the first time since the pandemic started. The Actors Fund Home Administrator Jordan Strohl represented The Fund and said, “What an amazing and emotional day. It was great to see family members reuniting for the first time in over 14 months. The live entertainment was inspiring and just lit up the crowd.” The event required a negative COVID-19 test for entry and was sponsored by United Airlines, Marriott Bonvoy and the travel identification technology platform CLEAR. United and the Marriott Marquis are official Fund sponsors. Most of the seniors in attendance came from South Florida on a United-sponsored flight.
