Message from the Chair

It’s Thanksgiving.  As we turn off the lights in our remote offices this week and prepare to sit down for a much-altered holiday dinner, we will reflect back on a year that brought much loss and anxiety.  A year that forced many of us to recast our vision of the short-term and to try to grasp its long-term implications.

Article Spotlight

We’re now in the 9th month of the COVID-19 pandemic, and it’s safe to say we’re all a bit on edge.  Of course those in “essential” and “caring” professions like nurses, doctors, social workers, religious leaders and other healthcare providers on the frontlines were among the first to succumb to compassion fatigue. But the truth is that people in any and every industry, our staff and our members or customers, are increasingly impacted by this phenomenon too. No surprise, then, that the big, beautiful hearts that attract people like us into “for purpose” association and non-profit careers are also at real risk.

1. Why did you choose the field of association management and what about it keeps you going?
I would not say that I chose association management but rather it chose me. I originally intended to work for a non-profit organization because it was in line with my interest in psychology. I planned to check it out for a bit and then investigate other options. However, after working for the association for a few months, I was hooked. I loved the mission of the organization and the passion and commitment of its members. There was so much to learn.
Synergy Awards
New category resulting from Covid-19 pandemic added to the Synergy Awards

The New York Society of Association Executives has added a category to its long-time Synergy Awards program. The new category is called “Crisis Innovation Award” and it will debut during the 2021 Synergy Awards breakfast on Friday, October 29, 2021.

The Synergy Awards Committee, co-chaired by Colleen Harper, MPA, CAE, Executive Director, Audio Engineering Society and Annette Homan, CAE, Chief Operating Officer, RIMS, established the new award because of the amount of entries received that covered the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The criteria states: The award celebrates an organization who reduces suffering, mobilizes responses, provides solace, or otherwise assists the people of NYC in partnership with, or as a complement to, government. The actions go beyond its normal scope, although it may be within its traditional portfolio.

NYSAE will announce the 2021 Synergy Award winners in January.

Negotiations have resumed on a COVID-19 stimulus deal but lawmakers still can’t agree on a price tag, reducing optimism that Congress can pass a bill before the end of the year. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) said on Nov. 10 that Congress should agree to a “highly targeted” relief bill similar to the $500 billion legislation that was blocked in the Senate earlier this year.
Senate Republicans released 12 bills to fund the federal government until next September, the first step toward negotiations with the Democratic-controlled House to avoid a shutdown Dec. 12. Senate Appropriations Committee Chairman Richard Shelby (R-AL) stressed that funding the government for fiscal year 2021 is a top priority in the lame duck session and that the bills have been drafted in a bipartisan manner.

As a leader, you know how to put on a brave face. Still, it’s common for high-performing executives, even those in the C-Suite, to experience self-doubt, feelings of inadequacy and imposter syndrome at certain points in their careers. The more challenging the issues and decisions, and the more you're stretching into uncharted territory or new roles, the more second guessing and doubt can be triggered. If impostor syndrome threatens to sabotage your leadership, or the leadership of members of your team, these strategies from coach, founder and CEO of The Confidence Labs, Heather Pownall, MBA, CAE, will help you beat self-doubt and build more confidence.
