Message from the Chair
Time marches on. As we approach the end of the calendar year, we are still in the midst of a convergence of trauma – the continuing pandemic, political uncertainty, racial unrest. Our associations and businesses are challenged, and we are emotionally drained. Most likely there is more unrest to come. How can we focus? How can we thrive both personally and professionally?

Q. I’m new to my role as director. I’m noticing my Board is either laid back during their board meetings or simply untrained. They’re not taking the time to review and approve the minutes. When I made sure it was on the agenda, my president asked me to handle, for me to ask for the motions and vote. They’re also asking me to give the financial report and go through the agenda items, asking each committee to report. Shouldn’t this all be done by the president? What can I say or point to regarding their responsibility?
News for New York Associations
Congratulations to NYC & Company! Their team has been awarded an Emmy for their 2019 tourism video, Welcome to Famous Original NYC—the first time their work has received this honor. Congratulations to their talented crew for their hard work and creativity, which continues to be illustrated throughout this challenging time.
A group of Lower Manhattan residents, “Downtown New Yorkers,” opposed to the plan recently announced by the Mayor to relocate more than 200 homeless men to a vacant hotel in the Financial District filed suit to block the move. The suit additionally alleges the City has no lawful authority to move the men, because its contract with the Hotel Association of New York City, through which it has been placing homeless individuals in hotels, has expired. More details here in The Broadsheet.
Over the last 50 years, the women of NYWICI have led the way in breaking down barriers for other women and supporting the next generation of female leaders. They’ve done it through their personal career triumphs, within the organizations they support and in the world around us though the work that they do. NYWICI’s Matrix Awards turned 50 and once again they honored the industry’s most outstanding leaders and celebrated all the courageous women that have come before them and those that will come after. The difference? This year it was online and more than 1,000 people logged on to watch the virtual awards program. Here’s the link.

While House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) and Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin inch closer to putting “pen to paper” on a large COVID-19 stimulus package, Senate leaders are discouraging the White House from making a deal ahead of the Nov. 3 election. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) told GOP colleagues this week that a stimulus deal in the $2 trillion range that Pelosi and Mnuchin are negotiating could splinter GOP ranks and disrupt the Senate’s plans to confirm Amy Coney Barrett to the Supreme Court next week.
A group of House Ways and Means Democrats questioned the IRS this week about why the agency suddenly revoked the tax-exempt status of more than 30,000 nonprofit groups, including 28,000 charities, in their home states. The IRS automatically revokes the exempt status of organizations that do not file a required Form 990 for three consecutive years, but due to the coronavirus pandemic, the IRS extended the filing date this year to July 15.
