Message from the Board

This was the first time I attended Meet NY as a member of the staff, watching from behind-the-scenes vs. attending as a qualified buyer. I so enjoyed looking at this wonderful program through a different lens. Thank you Meet NY co-chairs Betsy Totten and Matt Schechter, and their committee, for bringing all the exciting new additions and changes the attendees experienced this year...

LERP … SPIE … STEEP …UBIT. What do these terms have in common? They are all important acronyms for the successful association chief staff executive, and they are all valuable pieces of knowledge given to attendees of the NYSAE/ASAE jointly hosted CAE Kickoff that took place Feb. 3-5. A historic event, this was the first ever Kickoff to take place outside of Washington, D.C. Attendees came from all over the country – New Jersey, Virginia, Iowa, Utah and one even globe-trotted from Dubai! As someone attempting to earn the valued certified association executive (CAE) credential, I was proud to represent NYC.

Article Spotlight

By: Dr. Robert Spangler, Associate Executive Director, Operations and I.T., New Jersey State Bar Association & Lisa W. Spiegel, Esq., Associate Executive Director, Continuing Legal Education, New Jersey State Bar Association

Since its creation in 2008, blockchain technology and its capacity to provide data transparency, reliability, and security has garnered the excitement of business leaders, attorneys, technologists, and techies alike. Used properly, it has the capacity to transform both the legal industry and the world we live in. However, due to the experimental nature of the technology, a lack of federal and state guidance on its definition and acceptable use, and (until recently) a lack of practical use cases, significant confusion still exists as to how its steady rise will impact society and the legal industry. This article aims to describe the theory behind blockchain technology, explain in layperson’s terms why it has attracted so much attention, and provide insight into its application in the law.

Synergy Awards
It's fitting that right after Meet NY 2020 we announced that the two people who organized this year's event are the honorees for NYSAE's Distinguished Service Award. Matt Schechter, Regional Director, National Accounts, NYC & Company, and Betsy Totten, Global Account Executive, Marriott International, served as the Meet NY 2020 Committee co-chairs and helped produce the largest and most successful Meet NY to date.
Message from NYSAE Team
Thank you to everyone who attended Meet NY 2020, it was a day and night to remember! With close to 500 attendees it was one of our biggest events to date, and our photography partners at Natural Expressions NY was able to capture the excitement of the night in this photo album. Click through to relive the event and tag your friends. We’ve included some of our favorites below.

This year’s show featured a new opportunity: the sponsored passport program. Five hosts took advantage, providing a fun question unique to their destination that attendees would have to answer. Once an attendee had all five answers, their passport was complete and it was submitted in hopes to win one of these prizes: Apple AirPod Pros, NYSAE Organizational Membership or an unclaimed Silent Auction Lot.

Here were the night’s big winners, and our hosts who made it all possible:
ASME, Google, HelmsBriscoe, IEEE, International OCD Foundation, NBA.

Numerous events big and small have had to change their schedules or even cancel in response to lingering concerns about the Wuhan coronavirus. The disease led to the recent cancellation of Mobile World Congress, among others. https://associationsnow.com/2020/02/associations-cancel-events-shake-up-schedules-in-response-to-coronavirus/
