Message from the NYSAE Treasurer
Dear Colleagues and friends and fellow New Yorkers, It has been a year that defies any attempt at adequately characterizing the heart-rending economic, social and personal losses we have seen across communities in the great city and state. Your chair, Joanne, has noted how others have submitted war stories and, sadly, there is no better metaphor than that to describe how my industry (hotels) has practically been bombed out of existence.
Message from the Board
How was your Thanksgiving? I’m still being asked that question, and my answer is always the same. It was different than any other year. Instead of our usual crowd--which we Zoomed earlier that afternoon-- it was just the 3 of us for Thanksgiving dinner: my husband, my daughter who is now home from college and me. We brought in a traditional Thanksgiving dinner from a nearby restaurant and my husband cooked his favorite side dish of butternut squash. What wasn’t different? We took turns reflecting on all we are and have been thankful for this year, and perhaps more than any year prior.

Why did you choose the field of hospitality/associations and what about it keeps you going?
I happened to fall into it. I started as a waitress and after a few months, I felt it was a calling to work in hospitality. I love meeting new people and I thrive on the hustle and bustle of the hotel business. No two days are ever the same and when working with a fantastic team you feel like you are part of a family. As a bonus, I was able to take advantage of hotel discounts and travel, experiencing great destinations all over the world. News for New York Associations
•Hotel Association of New York City (HANYC) says members seeing occupancy rates in single digits, some on verge of closure. •Education and Research Foundation of the BBB of Metropolitan New York announces January 19 webcast, “Managing Change: Streamlining Your Finances and Operations for Sustainability.” •Trudy Singh, NYC & Company’s Regional Vice President of Sales, Mid-Atlantic, was recently honored by National Coalition of Black Meeting Professionals (NCBMP).

ASAE Corner
With a possible breakthrough in COVID-19 relief negotiations taking shape, ASAE has called on association leaders to write their legislators to ensure 501(c)(6) organizations are not left out of any end-of-year package. With the goal of helping secure PPP access for as many 501(c)(6) organizations as possible in any year-end COVID bill, ASAE is also redelivering to lawmakers its most recent sign-on letter calling on Congress to expand access to the Paycheck Protection Program (PPP) to include 501(c)(6) nonprofit organizations.
Long-stalled negotiations on a new COVID-19 stimulus package gained new life this week as Democratic leaders rallied behind a $908 billion framework developed by a bipartisan group of senators. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) and Senate Minority Leader Charles Schumer (D-NY) said in a joint statement yesterday that the senators’ framework outlined on Tuesday “should be used as the basis for immediate bipartisan, bicameral negotiations.”
ASAE joined a large coalition of business groups the week of November 16th in calling on the Trump administration to temporarily suspend “loan necessity” questionnaires developed to scrutinize businesses that took emergency payroll loans during the pandemic. The Small Business Administration (SBA) has been circulating the new questionnaires to obtain information from businesses that took Paycheck Protection Program (PPP) loans of $2 million or more, and the coalition is concerned about questions that appear biased against borrowers.
Despite widespread backing from ASAE and the business community, legislation that would protect organizations from business interruption losses resulting from future pandemics or public health emergencies continues to garner little support from Republicans or the insurance industry. Opposition to the Pandemic Risk Insurance Act (PRIA), introduced earlier this year by Rep. Carolyn Maloney (D-NY) and endorsed by ASAE and others, was evident during a hearing held today by the House Financial Services Subcommittee on Housing, Community Development and Insurance.
