Reflections

Maybe it’s just me, but I always feel like the confluence of so many fall and winter holiday celebrations creates some kind of warp in the space-time continuum.  One day it’s the middle of October, and then you blink.  Rosh Hashanah, Yom Kippur, Halloween, Día de los Muertos, Navratri, Diwali, Thanksgiving, Día de la Virgen de Guadalupe, Hanukkah, Kwanzaa, Christmas and more have passed.  It’s New Year’s Eve.  Before we get swept away, can we pause?

In July, I spoke with a group of association executives about the future of the association business model given the COVID-19 pandemic. At the time, the focus was on the immediate impact. Will we survive? Will our new ideas to adapt work? Will I have a job?
Membership Benefits
Has your association been able to develop a new revenue stream (not a virtual event) for your association during the pandemic? If yes, email Holly Koenig to let her know. We will be sharing the list in the next issue of InView.
NYSAE members and guests are invited to attend Engage 2020 on October 22nd at 2 pm EST. Engage 2020 is the premier conference on using video to drive member engagement.  Gather Voices was NYSAE’s partner for the Synergy Awards, and we’ll join them and other leading experts in engagement, virtual events and technology to learn how associations are leveraging video to create deeper connections with their members.
Do you want to meet with subject matter experts on association technology? Want to bounce off your ideas for a member win-back campaign? Do you have an issue related to governance that needs to be resolved? How about new ideas for virtual sponsorship? Don’t forget about NYSAE’s new member benefit, OFFICE HOURS! You and your team can set up an appointment with experts from the NYSAE team or we bring in SMEs from our membership. We’re in this together!

Q:  We need to reduce our overhead and operational expenses and we’re looking at all options as it relates to our technology costs. We don’t want to jeopardize quality. How would you recommend we go about this? We’re now looking at our project management systems, email marketing and awards technology. Thank you!

Industry News
The Broadway League announced last week that performances will now be suspended through May 30, 2021 due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic. Theaters in the city have been dark since March 12, 2020.
Lou Coletti, CEO of the Building Trades Employers Association (BTEA) and member of the NYSAE Board of Directors was published in the Sept. 29 edition of the Daily News. His piece, “The City Council’s glaring hypocrisy on job creation,” is about how the City Council failed to support the Industry City Project which would have brought thousands of jobs to New York City, with a percentage going to minority women business owners. BTEA has the most MWBE contractors of any associations in NYS.
The Home Fashion Products Association (HFPA) just announced that the March 2021 Home Textiles Market scheduled for March 22-25 will be held virtually. The HFPA Board made the decision based on their retail customer feedback and the difficult travel and tourism situation currently in New York. HFPA members include companies that manufacture, market, or supply for window treatments, bedding, bath, table linens, kitchen textiles, rugs and other home fashion accessories.

The COVID-19 pandemic is stressful. It’s been six months and many of us are still feeling fear, anxiety and overwhelmed. Our co-workers can feel it and our families are living it with us. Many of us have moved temporarily out of the city. Has that helped? Wherever we’re working, it’s in isolation and public health actions such as social distancing can make us feel lonely. Coping with stress in a healthy way will make you, your colleagues, the people you care about, and your community stronger. Lets's discuss this and more We will discuss all this and more with Richard Beck, LCSW, BCD, CGP, FAGPA our SME.
