Making Room for Diversity

At the December Executive Women in Nonprofits (EWIN) Engagement Group, Joanne Rencher, shared a thought-provoking presentation on the topic of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion. Rather than approach the complexities of this subject from the more familiar constructs, Joanne challenged participants to think and behave differently. Among many questions, two in particular loomed large in the room: despite the countless dollars spent, and with Chief Diversity Officers hired and initiatives underway, have we truly made room for this work or have we reduced it to solely demographics and new hires? According to Joanne, the path to true diversity “is to ensure that this work is part of the ‘DNA’ of every company, across every industry—where diversity of thought and perspective are pursued as aggressively as the more visible types of diversity.” She raised several “taboo” topics around race, gender and the perils of clinging to popular approaches at the expense of inviting all voices – and ideas – to the table. Through a methodical and probing presentation, Joanne invited candid conversation leaving attendees with new tools and strategies which could actually move the needle in this space. NYSAE thanks Joanne Rencher for coming to address this important topic and Visit Lauderdale for underwriting the breakfast. The next Executive Women in Nonprofits Engagement Group is Friday, January 10th.  Click here for eligibility and registration.
