New York State home sales in the 2011 first quarter lagged behind last year's federal tax credit-driven market, falling off by nearly 5 percent, according to preliminary single-family sales data accumulated by the New York State Association of REALTORS. The statewide median sales price increased by more than 5 percent from the first quarter of 2010.

New York REALTORS sold 13,623 existing single-family homes during the first quarter of 2011, a decrease of 4.9 percent from the 2010 first quarter, but an increase of 13.4 percent from the 2009 first quarter. The March 2011 sales total of 4,989 represents a 22-percent increase from February 2011 and a 9.7-decrease from March 2010.

The 2011 first quarter median sales price of $226,600 represents an increase of 5.4 percent from the 2010 first quarter and a 4.4-percent hike from the 2010 fourth quarter. The March statewide median sales price of $215,000 represented a decrease of 10.4 percent from the February median of $240,000, but was 7.5 percent above the March 2010 median of $200,000

According to the Siena Research Institute and New York State Association of REALTORS Consumer Real Estate Sentiment Scores for the first quarter of 2011, consumers in the Empire State see now as a poor time to sell but as a very good time to buy. Still, both the current sell and buy scores have moved in the direction of a thriving market. Looking forward, New Yorkers expect the overall real estate market and the value of property to increase over the next year.

NYSAR Radio will air "Utilizing the Commission Escrow Act," on Tuesday, May 17, from 10-11 a.m. The Internet-based, live call-in show is an extension of NYSAR's widely used free Legal Hotline and will be hosted by NYSAR Director of Legal Services S. Anthony Gatto, Esq. During the show, members can call and ask questions about the Commission Escrow Act. The ultimate goal of the show is to assist the member making the call and to educate all listening members.

The National Association of REALTORS is currently accepting applications for the 12th annual REALTOR Magazine Good Neighbor Awards. The awards recognize REALTORS for their dedication to volunteer service.

Five winners will be announced in the November issue of REALTOR Magazine. Each winner will be recognized at the 2011 REALTORS Conference & Expo in Anaheim, Calif., and receive a $10,000 grant for his or her charity. Winners will also receive travel expenses to the conference, and national and local media exposure for their community cause. In addition to the winners, five honorable mentions will each receive a $2,500 grant.
