Bargain shopping has become part of the retail landscape. The latest NRF Consumer View survey found that nine in 10 consumers say they shop at bargain retailers like discount grocery, thrift, dollar and off-price stores. As the holiday season approaches, NRF’s research team has identified three trends to pay attention to when appealing to consumers’ value-oriented mindset. Tiffany Williams, owner of the Luggage Shop in Lubbock, Texas, says tariffs on travel goods imported from China will be detrimental to her business. “The threat of these tariffs and the impact they’ll have is a huge unknown,” Williams, a third-generation retailer, said. Her suppliers are already warning that costs will increase. “It’s hard to imagine a consumer being willing to pay 25 percent more for a suitcase,” she said. Consumers say they will spend an average $1,007.24 during the holiday season this year, up 4.1 percent from the $967.13 last year, according to an NRF survey. They will spend in three main categories — gifts at $637.67, items such as food, decorations, flowers and greeting cards at $215.04 and non-gift purchases made because deals are good at $154.53.
