Concrete Innovations Session 20, The Importance of Innovation, is scheduled for Wednesday, May 15, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Eastern time. Innovation is the key to meeting carbon reduction goals of the building industry. All members of the design and build team must be willing to encourage innovative products and processes. This session will address how developers are incorporating innovative concrete products into their projects and how structural engineers are specifying for performance and low carbon. The session will show how concrete producers are implementing AI to optimize mixes and nanoparticles to improve concrete performance. Topics and speakers include:

  • De-Risking Lower-Carbon Concrete - The importance of innovation and the value proposition of leadership: Don Davies, co-founder, Davies-Crooks Associates; Sara Neff, head of sustainability, Lendlease Americas; James Murray-Coleman, director of sustainability, Trammel Crow Company
  • The Future of the Concrete Industry Using AI-Driven Solutions - Dr. Parham Aghdasi, founder and CEO, AICRETE

LEED v5 is in public comment period until May 20 and NRMCA and the Concrete Sustainability Council (CSC) are looking for the concrete industry to provide input. Concrete is well represented in the standard in nearly every category, with new credits for resilience, water conservation, urban heat islands and embodied carbon reduction. However, there are a few credits that could be improved, including optimized materials (responsible sourcing) and energy credits.

NRMCA and CSC are providing comments to the new standard, and we would like the concrete industry to help by also providing comments. Join us for a webinar on Tuesday, May 14, from 11 a.m. to noon Eastern time to learn how you can help.

Panelists include:

  • Tiffany Reed-Villarreal - director, sustainability codes and standards, NRMCA
  • Matthew Lemay - manager, codes and sustainability programs, NRMCA
  • Cynthia Imesch - sustainability manager & coordinator, Concrete Sustainability Council (CSC)
  • Christian Artelt - senior manager, sustainable construction, Heidelberg Materials and chair, CSC

NRMCA’s Annual Safety Award acknowledges the significant contribution that safe work practices gives to the growth and success of individual companies and the ready mixed concrete industry as a whole. The award is presented to an individual or company whose actions represent the very highest in the advancement of safety in the ready mixed concrete industry. The award program is generously sponsored by the Truck Mixer Manufacturers Bureau; the deadline to submit nominations is Friday, June 21.

NRMCA’s Commitment to Environmental Excellence Awards competition offers producers national recognition for outstanding contributions to protecting the environment and maintaining sound management practice in their operations. The program salutes companies that have not only met, but surpassed governmental compliance measures and demonstrated a commitment to environmental excellence through plant and staff investment. NRMCA member companies producing ready mixed concrete from a fixed plant location in the U.S., its territories or Canada are eligible to enter.

Awards will be determined upon individual plant merits. Winning entrants will be honored at the Awards Ceremony at NRMCA‘s ConcreteWorks this October in Aurora, CO. Winners will also be featured in a 2024 edition of NRMCA’s Concrete InFocus magazine and Concrete Products magazine.

Entries and photos must be e-mailed to kwalgenbach@nrmca.org by Friday, July 19. Click here for more information and to download the entry form. The staff contact is Kevin Walgenbach.

The NRMCA Engineering Department has updated the NRMCA Pre‐Construction Checklist – Concrete Acceptance Testing and the PowerPoint presentation Code and Standards Requirements For Acceptance Testing along with the accompanying notes. The checklist now includes onsite monitoring of field concrete testing and enforcement of initial curing requirements through an inspection process.

These resources, as well as allied documents, are available here. They can be used to ensure that acceptance testing conforms to industry codes and standards, an important step toward attaining low carbon concrete.
