Carbon reduction for concrete is complex - material availability, performance criteria, LCA and EPDs are all factors affecting the ability to reduce carbon footprint. The concrete industry is committed to making the process simpler. This session of Concrete Innovations will present different strategies to reduce carbon footprint of concrete using novel supplementary cementitious materials, AI and easy-to-use software tools.

Register now for Concrete Innovations Learning Session 16, to be held Wednesday, October 18, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Eastern time.

• Eco-Efficient and Carbon-Negative Supplementary Cementitious Materials Derived from Solid Wastes, - Dr. Hongyan Ma, associate professor, Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering, Missouri S&T

• Measurement, Control, and Improvement, The Emergence of EPD 3.0 for Managing Carbon Reduction - Chris Erickson, CEO, Climate Earth

• Reducing Carbon Through Innovative Technology, Stephen Herald, technical services manager and Kai Hilton, quality control supervisor, Holcim

• NRMCA Concrete Carbon Calculator, Brandon Wray, director, building innovations, NRMCA

Derek Torres from Build With Strength and Brian Killingsworth from Pave Ahead attended the 2023 ASCC Conference which took place late last month in Grand Rapid, MI, to introduce the Concrete Design Center to contractors and designers, aiming to educate them about the valuable, complimentary services offered through both campaigns. Beyond their roles as exhibitors, Killingsworth also serves as a member of the NRMCA/ASCC Paving Committee. During these discussions, important topics were discussed with the hope of identifying key accounts within the paving industry, emphasizing the significance of social media, promoting successful projects and more.

Build With Strength Director, Sustainability Codes and Standards, Tiffany Reed-Villarreal, P.E., participated in NEU's Summit on Advancing Carbon-Neutral Concrete Materials and Technologies. The event featured attendees from prominent organizations such as the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), Department of Energy (DOE), Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) and the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST). During this significant gathering, federal agency representatives, NEU members and allied industry association representatives (seen here, with Ms. Reed-Villarreal sixth from right in front row) engaged in discussions about industry requirements, ongoing projects and collaborative efforts to achieve carbon neutrality across the cement-concrete value chain by 2050.

The MFE Conference, a premier multifamily event is a three-day event, held this year in September in Dallas, that offers access to the insight needed to survive the challenges of the build environment and to tap into opportunities for the future. It attracts influencers in the multifamily housing industry, owners and developers, C-Level executives, investment firms, architects and contractors. Leaders from around the U.S. heard from their peers who have conquered new avenues, influencing design build and operating decisions.

NRMCA ‘s Build With Strength team of Patrick Matsche, Brandon Wray and Justin McCain was supported by Randy Daniels, Truegrid (Fox Blocks) and Cameron Ware, Tremco (NUDURA). Build With Strength held sperate events, meeting one on one with the owners of multifamily development firms. Ryan and Heidi Bedford of Bedford Development spoke support of concrete/Insulated Concrete Forms (ICFs) construction practices, citing the enhanced ROI benefits of concrete structures. Bedford, based in Waukesha, WI is an owner operator of multifamily housing, responsible for over $150 million in new development.

NRMCA’s Build With Strength and Pave Ahead teams were pleased to be a part of the education and trade show program at this year’s Greenbuild international conference and expo. Held annually, Greenbuild brings together green building professionals from around the world. This year’s conference was held in Washington, DC, and featured a wide array of industry leaders and experts. NRMCA’S Build With Strength team hosted a booth and took part in conversations with design professionals from across the country about the benefits of ready mixed concrete in resilient and energy efficient buildings. NRMCA member Heidelberg Materials also assisted with hosting the booth on the busy trade show floor.

Embodied carbon, environmental product declarations, resiliency and the path to a carbon free built environment were all hot topics. NRMCA was there to ensure a full understanding that concrete is the material of choice and the material of the future. The team also met with General Service Administration Secretary Robin Carnahan who was enthusiastic about concrete's role in a resilient, sustainable future. "It was a great opportunity to share innovative learnings, reinforce our members' commitment to champion sustainable practices and reaffirm our shared vision for sustainable buildings," said NRMCA Vice President, Building Innovations, Michael Wymant.

Last week, NRMCA Senior Director, Building Innovations, Frank Mruk (seen here at top, far left) presented Decarbonizing Concrete Now: Reports From The Field at the Construction Specifications Institute’s (CSI) National Conference in Minneapolis. Over 45 participants attended the event. The conference celebrated the 75th anniversary of CSI and hosted over 500 architects, engineers and specifiers from around the United States for the 3-day event. The CSI23 theme was Mastering Change. Mruk serves on the CSI Northeast Region Board and was a past president of the Metro New York Chapter.

The Build With Strength program is a leader in supporting architects, engineers and construction specifications professionals at the cutting edge of industry best practices. For more information, contact Frank Mruk at fmruk@nrmca.org.
