On May 10, NRMCA’s Karthik Obla presented a webinar titled Selecting Exposure Classes and Requirements for Durability offered through Structure magazine, published by the National Council of Structural Engineers Associations. More than 1,300 specifying engineers had registered for the event. The ACI 318, Building Code Requirements for Structural Concrete, defines exposure classes and applicable requirements for concrete mixtures used to construct buildings. ACI 301, Specification for Concrete Construction, incorporates these requirements in the ACI reference specification.

Assigning durability exposure classes is part of the design process and is the responsibility of a licensed design professional. NRMCA has developed some simple resources that will help designers select the appropriate durability exposure class and corresponding concrete requirements. The presentation discussed the durability requirements of the code and involved a demonstration of the NRMCA resources. The webinar was sponsored by NRMCA’s Build With Strength initiative.

NRMCA’s Patrick Matsche, Brandon Wray and Donn Thompson recently presented at Microsoft’s quarterly meeting of its national and global sustainability design build teams. Matsche and Wray discussed Reducing Concrete’s Carbon Impact with two sessions held over multiple days via webinars. The presentations focused on the role of NRMCA as the voice of the ready mixed concrete industry, education and promotion offerings, and the codes and standards platforms of Build With Strength and PaveAhead.

The impact of Reducing Concrete’s Carbon Impact for the international design build community reinforced Microsoft’s commitment to reducing the embodied carbon of concrete used as the building material of choice throughout the United States and abroad. Possible U.S. project locations include Texas, Wisconsin, Virginia and other Eastern seaboard states, to name a few, Matsche said.

NRMCA’s invitation to address the sustainability groups’ quarterly meeting follows a yearslong effort of Build With Strength and PaveAhead to support the design build community’s drive to a low carbon future. “The impact of the disruptors and investor class within the ESG and sustainability movement to adopt SE2050 goals affords the NRMCA a unique opportunity to position concrete as the low carbon building material of choice,” Wray said.

For more information, contact Patrick Matsche at pmatsche@nrmca.org or 415-672-5275 or Brandon Wray bwray@nrmca.org or 408-806-0453.

Does your facility need to report to the Toxics Release Inventory (TRI) Program? Have you run the calculations to determine if your facility does? Do you know what the requirements are and/or how to report if necessary? Now’s the time to obtain answers to all of these questions.

Remember, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) TRI Program “tracks the management of more than 650 toxic chemicals that may pose a threat to human health and the environment.“ Specifically, “U.S. facilities in certain industry sectors must report annually how much of each chemical is released to the environment and/or managed through recycling, energy recovery and treatment.” This information is then submitted annually to EPA and compiled in the TRI.

Facilities that handle toxic chemicals, including ready mixed concrete plants, are required to calculate the quantities that were handled and if any quantity is over an allowable threshold, that chemical and amount need to be reported under the program. Should a facility need to report, the reporting deadline is July 1.

EPA's TRI Program website contains more information, including listed chemicals, potential for reporting and when/how to report. NRMCA staff contacts are Gary Mullings and Kevin Walgenbach.

Registration is now open for NRMCA's revised mixer driver certification program. The material focuses on the aspects of the job beyond driving a commercial vehicle. CDP emphasizes the professional, technical aspects of the job. The participant’s reward is a nationally recognized certification.

This newly updated curriculum meets all new industry codes and standards. The value of even the best internal training program can be enhanced by the validation of NRMCA’s Concrete Delivery Professional certification. This program provides a competitive advantage by assuring customers that your mixer drivers are introduced to industry operation standards so your customers can expect the highest level of professionalism.
