The Concrete Advancement Foundation has launched a targeted recruitment strategy, connecting members of the skateboarding community to careers in the concrete supply and concrete construction industries. The program, called Skate4Concrete, was developed by Project Cornerstone with funding from the Concrete Advancement Foundation. It consists of recruitment videos featuring skaters, skatepark construction and career opportunities in concrete, filmed in cooperation with 900 Films, the production company owned by skateboarding icon Tony Hawk. It also boasts a website to connect skaters to career opportunities, a social media campaign and a high school-level technical concrete certification program.

Companies, individuals, school representatives and other interested parties are invited to a webinar scheduled for Tuesday, April 18, at noon Eastern time, 9 a.m. Pacific time, to learn more about the Skate4Concrete program and how it can be used.

By far the most feasible option to reduce CO2 from cements is to partially replace the clinker component with substitutes. Calcined clay is an excellent alternative to traditional supplementary cementitious material. Concrete Innovations Session 10: Limestone Calcined Clay Cement (LC3) will discuss the opportunities, challenges and progress of LC3 in the United States and other parts of the world. It is scheduled for Wednesday, April 19, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Eastern time and will feature the following speakers:

  • LC3 / LC2 a Breakthrough Technology to Lower CO2 - Karen Scrivener, professor, Construction Materials Laboratory, EPFL, Lausanne, Switzerland
  • Opportunities to Demonstrate Low Carbon Concrete in Transportation Infrastructure - Tom Van Dam, principal at NCE, Hancock, MI
  • Manufacturing LC3 - Opportunities and Challenges - Cheng Qi, technical center director, Ash Grove Cement Company

The 2023 Fleet Benchmarking Survey is filled out by industry fleet managers and/or financial managers early each year, based on data gathered from the previous calendar year’s performance. This year’s form includes new questions on mixer drum composition, idle time and types of fuel being used. The survey is used to establish industry benchmarking norms and procedures; information gathered will be published in a full report in Concrete InFocus magazine this fall. A shorter Executive Summary is also made available to all.

The deadline to e-mail entries to fleetbenchmark@nrmca.org is Friday, April 21. Click here for more information and to download entry form. The staff contact is Gary Mullings.

The annual nomination period for the Developing Industry Leaders Program (DIL) closes in just two weeks. It is not only a premier career development, but also retention support for those middle managers you envision having a longterm career with your company. NRMCA provides participants the opportunity to advance their strategic-thinking skills and network with peers while being mentored by NRMCA’s senior staff examining the industry’s big issues from an all-encompassing, national perspective.

Once selected, DILs work over the summer via conference calls and webinars. They are then required to attend ConcreteWorks in Nashville, September 29 - October 3. The group continues to work via conference calls over the fall and winter. They will present their findings at the March 2024 NRMCA Annual Convention. During their second year, DILs attend a two-day, networking and leadership workshop facilitated by an executive coach. Finally, once their initial work is over, individuals are asked to make a longterm commitment to move their team’s initiative(s) forward by joining, and attending, the appropriate NRMCA committee meetings twice a year as well as participate in annual DIL alumni events. Additionally, they may attend NRMCA’s semi-annual Board of Directors meetings to watch senior level executives deliberate and make both short- and longterm strategic decisions that impact the industry.
