In a first for NRMCA’s EPD program, a Materials Division member, Euclid Chemical, has completed an EPD; reporting the impacts for four microfibers and one macrofiber for concrete reinforcement. This is the first EPD for a reinforcing fiber product published through the NRMCA EPD program. The EPD was conducted in accordance with ISO 21930 as the core product category rule (PCR) as there is no currently published subcategory PCR for reinforcing fibers. This represents an important, early step in establishing EPDs as an industry standard for reinforcing fiber products and toward accounting for the impacts of ready mixed concrete’s entire supply chain. Public access to the EPD is available on the NRMCA EPD webpage as NRMCA EPD: 20080 Euclid Chemical. The EPD was developed in consultation with Béton Consulting Engineers, and was verified by Labeling Sustainability, a verifier in NRMCA’s EPD program.

NRMCA Senior Vice President, Local Paving, Phil Kresge recently participated in the Ohio Concrete Association’s (OCA) Northwest OCA Winter Contractor Seminar in Lima. Kresge’s presentation, Reacting to a Runaway Concrete Placement discussed the properties of fresh concrete and what contractors should do to manage the placing and finishing of concrete on order to achieve quality results. Kresge also addressed several common concrete surface defects and how contractors can avoid them. The half-day seminar was organized by OCA Northwest Promotion Director Wayne Moening.

The event was the first in a series of winter programs hosted across the state by the OCA. Other topics included Learn New Ways to Make the Cake which discussed the latest trends in concrete mix design; Reinforcement and Joint Layouts – What Makes Sense Today and Contractor’s Legal Obligations. Upcoming seminars are scheduled for Dayton (February 16) and Columbus (March 7). Contact OCA Promotion Directors Ryan McAleer and Lisa Weaver-Moon for details.
