Derek Torres has joined NRMCA as project manager, concrete promotion, for both Build With Strength and Pave Ahead. Based in Philadelphia, he will help the building and pavement promotion teams to identify and educate developers, architects, engineers and contractors about the benefits and advantages of concrete over asphalt, wood and steel in hopes of converting projects to concrete. Before joining NRMCA, Torres worked as a quality control technician for NRMCA member The Silvi Group Companies on major concrete projects throughout Pennsylvania and New Jersey. His daily responsibilities included performing ACI field tests, ensuring aggregates and cement met DOT specifications, developing new mix designs and ensuring concrete plants were up to date with their certifications. Mr. Torres attended the New Jersey Institute of Technology where he earned a bachelor of science degree in architecture and and a bachelor of science degree in engineering technology with the Concrete Industry Management (CIM) program. Every now and then a class has a stellar performance. This year’s Plant Manager Certification class held in February at the Carolinas Ready Mixed Concrete Association’s headquarters in Charlotte was one of them. The certification requires attendees pass two exams and 95% did so. Additionally, 26% scored at least 90% on both. First in the class was Matt Brock from Crete Solutions, Wilmington, NC. The others on the “A Team," in alphabetical order, are Justin Brunnemer, Concrete Supply Company; Brenton Bush, Watchtower; Logan Dean, Ernst Concrete; Neil Dickerson, S & W Ready Mixed Concrete; John Downie, Concrete Supply Company; Jason Hatch, Insight Group; Randy Howell, Thomas Concrete; Branden McNiff, Watchtower and Chad Wessels, Watchtower. NRMCA is offering its information-packed, one-day course, Handling Concrete Specifications, Low Strength Problems and Mixture Submittals, intended for concrete producers, contractors, engineers and testing labs on Wednesday, May 1, in Charlotte, NC, in association with the Carolinas Ready Mixed Concrete Association.

NRMCA's Workforce Development Committee will host its two-day Spring 2019 working meeting and networking opportunity in Chicago, May 13-14. Ready mix producers that want to address the industry’s employment challenges are invited. Task groups will meet individually the afternoon of Monday, May 13, followed by a group networking dinner and concluding with a full committee meeting on Tuesday, May 14. That meeting will dismiss at noon. Attendees typically include senior HR and training professionals, senior level managers from all spectrums of the ready mixed concrete business and mixer driver supervisors. The committee’s goals are to address industry-wide recruitment and retention, leadership development and industry-based training as well as labor, regulatory and legislative issues. In today’s full employment economy, our industry is vigorously competing with everyone to fill – and keep – staff, from entry level to the C-Suite.
