Earlier this week, the Environmental Protection Agency released the long-awaited proposed rewrite of its Waters of the US (WOTUS) jurisdictional rule. EPA stated the new proposal aims to “establish a clear, durable, common-sense definition.” The key updated provisions include definition clarity, many of which benefit ready mixed concrete plants. Of interest to the ready mixed concrete industry are several terms that impact concrete plants, including “continuous surface connection,” “ditches,” “waste treatment systems” and “groundwater.” The updated definitions continue to allow concrete plants to operate with the certainty that these features and their possible existence at some concrete plants will NOT be covered under WOTUS. NRMCA applauds these commonsense updates that continue to provide regulatory compliance certainty. Once published in the Federal Register, EPA will accept public comment on the proposal for 45 days. NRMCA recently joined with various partners, contractors, product suppliers and local dignitaries to celebrate the official opening of the Nicor Gas Smart Neighborhood Show Home, part of an innovative 17 concrete home high performance neighborhood west of Chicago, reports Senior Director, Building Innovations, Donn Thompson.
Pavement
The Illinois Ready Mixed Concrete Association (IRMCA) hosted over 35 attendees (many shown here) at its Concrete Pavement Design Fall Seminar where NRMCA Senior Director, Local Paving, Luke McHugh demonstrated the effects of poor jointing practice and presented several case studies on how projects with poor layouts were improved. McHugh illustrated that the maximum joint spacing is usually not the preferred joint spacing and offered tips on what to do and not do when jointing concrete parking lot pavement. In addition, IRMCA's Jim Randolph stressed why ACI Flatwork Certification should be in specifications and his colleague, Jesse Jonas, emphasized how ADA compliance is an important consideration when justifying concrete intersections and roundabouts.
