This issue includes timely and informative regular columns - Build With Strength, Cement Side, Enviroscene and Pave Ahead - in addition to feature articles under the headings of Innovations in Pavement, Research & Engineering and Members Corner. NRMCA Board Chairman G. Carlton Golden, Jr., is also included in this issue; his Letter from the Chairman begins the issue. He discusses what he and his Board colleagues believe are key topics for NRMCA staff and members as we move toward 2026 and beyond.

The 3rd Annual American Cement Association's (ACA) Sustainability Summit, a virtual event scheduled for August 26 - 28, will feature industry experts addressing the federal government’s permitting process and the impact it’s having on the advancement of alternative fuels; making the most out of working with lower-carbon cements at construction sites; why it’s still “all systems go” on Carbon Capture, Utilization and Storage (CCUS) development despite recent funding cuts and much more.

The Safety, Environmental and Operations (SEO) Committee is still soliciting NRMCA members for 2026 Carpenter-Mullings Award nominations. Award recipients are singled out for their outstanding lifetime contribution to the ready mixed concrete industry in the field of operations, safety or environmental. Nominees may be ready mixed concrete company employees, manufacturers or suppliers to the industry or association staff members. They can be active, retired or deceased. Nominations are tendered and reviewed annually; however, awards are only given when deemed appropriate by the SEO Committee.

Nominations for the Carpenter-Mullings Award are solicited annually from SEO Committee. A task group of active past winners will review the submissions and present their nominee for approval of the full committee at the fall SEO Committee meeting. Results will be announced immediately, and the award will be presented at the 2026 NRMCA Annual Convention. The nominations deadline is Friday, September 5.

NRMCA Senior Director, Local Paving, Greg Halsted recently attended meetings of the American Public Works Association's (APWA) Transportation Committee and Sustainability and Resilience Committee which met in conjunction with the APWA Public Works Exposition (PWX) held in Chicago. The meetings focused on upcoming training initiatives designed to help develop and promote environmentally sound, sustainable, cost-effective and safe transportation systems. Halsted, already a member of the Sustainable Transportation Subcommittee, told both committees that NRMCA was committed to building durable and sustainable streets and local roads, and often engaged with public works staff to educate them on concrete pavement options. Committee members noted that such assistance was extremely useful as the topic of lowering CO2 emissions was being seen more often on their projects, Halsted said.

While at PWX, Halsted also visited what is arguably the largest exhibit floor for public works equipment and services, attended by over 5,000 public works professionals including some 400 exhibiting companies. Halsted chatted with current and prospective NRMCA members as well as allied cement and concrete industry partners (Halsted is shown here at left with Eric Ferrebee in the ACPA booth). The committee meetings and trade show were both excellent opportunities to introduce city and county public works officials from across North America to NRMCA and the Pave Ahead program.
