Ready Mixed Concrete, Masonry Industries Partner to Oppose Mass Timber Legislation

Government Affairs teams for both NRMCA and the Concrete Masonry and Hardscapes Association (CMHA) met with Senate offices in late May to express concerns and opposition to S. 1094, the Mass Timber Federal Buildings Act. This legislation would require the General Services Administration (GSA) to give preference to mass timber construction when renting, building or purchasing a building. Given the GSA’s significant footprint in the built environment – it has a portfolio of more than 10,000 buildings – preferences like this have the potential to distort incentives and impact market demand for buildings based on construction materials.

NRMCA and CMHA maintain that Congress should approach construction from a material-neutral perspective and avoid policies that tend to prefer one material over another.
