Sustainable Concrete Solutions Featured at AEI 2025 Conference

Kansas City, KS, was the site of this year’s Architectural Engineering Institute Conference held in partnership with Kansas State University and the University of Wyoming. Reimagining the buildings of the future to be more adaptable, healthy and sustainable was the overarching theme, attracting practitioners and students from throughout the country.

Build With Strength figured prominently with presentations included in the Build Sustainable and the Build Enclosure tracks. NRMCA Senior Director, Building Innovations, Donn Thompson, presented two breakout sessions, each designed to raise awareness of the environmental flexibility and versatility concrete mixes and forming technologies can provide. The first, Sustainable Concrete: How to Quantify & Reduce Carbon, discussed NRMCA’s industrywide EPD program and the Concrete Carbon Calculator tool, and how designers can leverage each to take the mystery out of establishing realistic targets for lowering the embodied carbon footprint of concrete. The second Build With Strength presentation, High Performance, Low Carbon Building Systems, outlined various cost effective, concrete construction systems available today, offering effective carbon reduction as well as improved operational efficiencies and resilience.

“The ability to customize ready mixed concrete to meet established carbon reduction targets is becoming better understood by architects and engineers," Thompson said. "Our products are more accurately being seen as offering the most effective longterm solutions to these issues.”
