Working with the business community through the Coalition for a Democratic Workplace, NRMCA is meeting with Republicans and Democrats on Capitol Hill to urge opposition to the PRO Act. This legislation has yet to be introduced in the 117th Congress, but it was passed by the House last year and is expected to be reintroduced shortly as a priority for Democrats. The legislation is a cornucopia of anti-business policies that NRMCA has long opposed, including the Joint Employer standard, micro unions, blacklisting, ambush elections and card check – in addition to policies that infringe on employees’ privacy, employers’ attorney-client privilege and states’ right to work laws.
President Biden is an outspoken advocate for organized labor. While campaigning for president, he promised to be the strongest labor president unions had ever had. His campaign website featured his support for the PRO Act. During the last Congress, despite passing the House, the Senate’s pro-business majority did not consider the legislation.
The PRO Act is just one of a raft of anti-business policies we expect from a Democratic Congress and the Biden Administration. Just days into his administration, President Biden’s COVID relief bill includes increasing the minimum wage to $15 per hour and his nominee for secretary of labor, Boston Mayor Marty Walsh, is a former president of his union.
