CP Tech Center Resources Issues Updates

The National Concrete Pavement Technology Center has issued the following updates:

• A new Tech Brief reports on the use of recycled concrete aggregates in roadway shoulders. It describes qualification requirements, design techniques and construction considerations for unbound recycled concrete aggregate (RCA) shouldering materials that are being used in some states. The brief outlines economic and environmental factors that make RCA attractive for this use. Click here to view the new publication.

• Open houses showcase Performance Engineered Mixtures (PEM) program demonstrations – Practitioners in Minnesota and Iowa were provided opportunities to see how new concrete test methods that are part of the PEM initiative work. The PEM program, a joint industry/government effort, centers on measuring and controlling the concrete mixture in tandem with engineering properties that actually relate to performance. The CP Tech Center helped host two Midwestern demonstrations highlighting the PEM initiative’s progress. The Minnesota open house was held July 18 at Forest Lake in Washington County (I-35) and the Iowa US 20 paving project in Ida and Sac counties was the location for the August 1 opportunity to learn about the uses of new PEM tests. The Federal Highway Administration’s Mobile Concrete Trailer (MCT) was present at both events to demonstrate PEM techniques in design and construction.
