NRMCA Delivers Build with Strength Campaign in Hawaii

Late last month, NRMCA Vice President of Sustainability Tien Peng delivered the Build with Strength campaign message to the Cement and Concrete Products Industry of Hawaii (CCPI). Approximately 50 industry professionals attended the annual meeting in Wailea, Maui. Peng was invited to deliver industry initiatives by Kirk Hashimoto, the new executive director of CCPI.Hawaii’s concrete producers and products have enjoyed strong market support due to its unique climatic and geographic conditions. Concrete is the material of choice for resilience construction, mitigating the disastrous effects of fire, moisture, termites and high winds. However, the State Building Code Council of Hawaii is currently considering an update to the building and fire codes (currently 2006 versions of the IBC) which includes unprecedented sprinkler “trade-offs.”

Build with Strength is a coalition led by NRMCA that promotes concrete building systems through communications, project promotion, education and advocacy; it can help leverage safety standards to help place more concrete.
