State and local government facilities are excellent opportunities in which to demonstrate Zero Net Energy (ZNE) innovations such as insulating concrete forms (ICF). It is also particularly important for the school sector to lead by example both for educational purposes and to establish market viability and credibility of policy efforts. Ready mixed concrete has been a key component of the ZNE successes in Kentucky and Virginia schools. ZNE is a relatively new concept in the energy efficiency world; a building that produces as much energy through clean, onsite renewable resources as it consumes over the course of a year.

The California Energy Efficiency Strategic Plan has set ambitious goals for achieving ZNE for all new commercial buildings by 2030. To support these ambitious state goals, a workshop will be held on June 14-15 in Fresno to give local government staff the information, tools and confidence to create and drive progress toward ZNE goals. The free (to local governments) workshop will show how cities can be leaders within their own public building portfolios by creating a clear code and policy road map, and by transforming the market through public awareness.
