CP Tech Announces Series of Fall Webinars

The following three CP Tech Webinars will be offered on the dates listed below. They are open to all at no cost, but pre-registration is necessary in order to receive your login link.

Supplementary Cementitious Materials (NEW) - This Webinar, co-sponsored by FHWA and the CP Tech Center, introduces participants to the most common SCMS used in conjunction with portland cement in concrete mixtures for pavement applications: coal fly ash, slag cement, silica fume and natural pozzolans. It discusses how SCMs react in mixtures, highlighting their benefits and drawbacks. Finally, the Webinar briefly reviews ternary mixtures, in which the binder is composed of portland cement and two SCMs, and summarizes SCM-related trends in specifications, materials availability, and testing.

November 1 at 10 a.m. Central time and November 8 at noon Central time.

Internal Curing - Curing of concrete pavements is vital for hydraulic cement to hydrate, gain strength and provide durability. It has long been known that supplying additional water after the concrete has set can improve overall concrete performance by increasing the reaction of cementitious material. Internal curing provides a modern twist on this practice by supplying curing water from within the concrete. With internal curing, water from pre-wetted and expanded lightweight fine aggregates disperses throughout the concrete. Recently, internal curing has been transitioning from the laboratory to final field trials and implementation. It has been implemented in bridge decks in five states and in pavement sections in four states; other states are actively experimenting with internal curing for pavements, overlays and bridge decks.

October 12 and November 10, each at 10:30 a.m. Central time.

Recycling of Concrete Pavements - As a pavement approaches the end of its performance life and needs to be reconstructed, significant value can frequently be derived by reusing the concrete during reconstruction. Too often, however, lack of understanding about practical options, as well as lack of specification and design procedures, has been a barrier to innovation at the project level. This Webinar introduces participants to recycled concrete applications and ways to incorporate more sustainable, cost-effective features into projects. Topics include performance of past applications, construction considerations, environmental considerations and assessment.

October 19 and November 16, each at 10 a.m. Central time.
