Battling the Scourge of Concrete Cracks

"Self-healing concrete" may not yet be commercially viable, but various researchers developing these forms of concrete are hoping to reduce the carbon emissions produced by concrete plants around the world. In the United Kingdom, the development of bio-concrete using bacteria is being studied, while researchers in South Korea are creating a concrete coating that contains microcapsules that release sealant materials that react to sunlight and solidify to seal the cracks.
