NRMCA Director, Sustainability Codes and Standards, Tiffany Reed-Villarreal, P.E., recently participated in the Carbon Progress Summit held at the National Press Club in Washington, DC. The summit convened leaders from the cement, concrete and steel industries along with construction stakeholders to highlight measurable progress in carbon dioxide (CO₂) emissions reduction and material circularity across the construction materials value chain.

Discussions highlighted industry efforts demonstrating CO₂ emissions reduction and avoidance metrics measured in the tens of millions of tons, driven by material innovation, alternative fuels, supplementary cementitious materials (SCMs), recycling and renewable energy adoption. Speakers emphasized the importance of collaboration among producers, designers, contractors and policymakers in advancing climate goals while maintaining performance, durability and resilience.

Carbon management strategies were a central focus of the summit, including pathways toward carbon-neutral operations, transparent emissions measurement and reliable reporting frameworks. Participants also discussed the role of performance-based approaches and market signals in supporting innovation across concrete and construction materials. The summit concluded with an emphasis on continued cross-sector coordination to advance scalable, data-driven solutions that support sustainability objectives across the built environment.

NRMCA regularly advocates on behalf of ready mixed concrete at the policy level. For more information on concrete sustainability, contact Tiffany Reed-Villarreal (who is seen here with American Cement Association President and CEO Mike Ireland).
