NRMCA Senior Director, Building Innovations, Patrick Matsche recently presented the Association's Concrete Innovation Awards at a luncheon sponsored by the Utah Ready Mixed Concrete Association (URMCA) and the Intermountain Chapter of the American Concrete Institute held in Salt Lake City. The awards recognize outstanding achievement in concrete design and construction, including those that lower environmental impacts such as embodied and operational carbon footprint.

The winner, the City of Salt Lake and the Utah Transportation Authority: Electric Bus Charging Station, was led by NRMCA Associate member Roman Cement. The city used patented Roman Cement technology to re-design its standard concrete mix for its electric bus charging station project. The redesign enabled the city to reduce the use of cement (and therefore the carbon footprint and overall material cost) compared to standard and historical mix design. The redesign also improved strength, workability, performance and durability of the concrete.

Special thanks to NRMCA members who contributed to the success of the project, including Altaview Concrete and Geneva Rock Products. Etien Frett, P.E., Euclid Chemical Company, delivered the keynote address titled Repair of Construction Defects.

“We really appreciate the support of Build With Strength as we move across market sectors improving the performance of concrete while also reducing cost,” said Roman Concrete CEO David Hall.
