The iconic all-concrete National Veterans Memorial Museum in Columbus, OH, was the site of a half day Concrete by Design event co-hosted by Ohio Concrete and NRMCA. Contractors, architects, engineers, developers and local ready mixed concrete producers (some seen here) attended the event that highlighted cost effective concrete building and pavement solutions, reports NRMCA Senior Director, Building Innovations, Donn Thompson.

Ryan Bedford, the president of Bedford Development who has built multiple all-concrete projects for his own development company, described the improved performance of his strong, sustainable properties since converting to all-concrete construction over 10 years ago. Matt Green, vice president of business development for Ryan’s construction subsidiary, KB Walker, provided the ins and outs of insulating concrete form (ICF), construction based on multiple large-scale projects they have done throughout the U.S.

Thompson's colleague, Senior Vice President, Local Paving, Phil Kresge, demonstrated more efficient and longer lasting use of concrete pavements. Thompson discussed the low carbon benefits of concrete for team members looking to reduce the embodied carbon footprint. Chuck Hoke of Dayton Superior presented wall construction advantages with architectural tilt-up concrete.

Representatives from the museum staff as well as Baker Concrete Construction described the advanced construction techniques and 3D modeling needed to achieve the unusual, curved design. “The complex shape of this building and high-quality finishes could only be realized with the sculptural qualities and advanced concrete mixes available today,” remarked Thompson. Attendees were able to tour the one-of-a-kind facility dedicated to veterans from all branches of service and all eras of U.S. military history.
