NRMCA Attends National Concrete Consortium Meeting

NRMCA participated in the Spring 2024 National Concrete Consortium meeting in Birmingham, AL, on April 8 - 10. The event was attended by more than 250 state highway, federal highway, and industry personnel. Highlights include:

• A summary of state highway agency reports on precast concrete
• Update on the Inflation Reduction Act from FHWA and funding opportunities for state agencies for low carbon construction initiatives
• Update on the NIST low carbon cements and concrete consortium
• Update on AASHTO standards, including a Low Carbon Guide, quality assurance guide, using maturity for early opening to traffic and precision and bias of resistivity and the super air meter (SAM) test methods
• Jim Mack with CEMEX provided an overview of the need for agencies to accept low carbon cements to support cement and concrete industry’s goals for lower carbon construction, followed by CP Tech Center’s Dan King’s summary of future of cementitious materials and dealing with these changes
• An overview of the I59 Alabama mainline concrete paving project and experiences from Iowa and Minnesota on using maturity for early opening to traffic
• A session on digital construction technology, including the requirement for e-tickets for concrete from Iowa and Utah, and other initiatives followed by a summary of the AASHTO MDM-1-UL Materials Delivery Management System (MDMS)
• Summary of curing and sawing and tools that can facilitate proper timing of these operations
• The session concluded with a tour of City Walk BHAM and NUCOR Steel manufacturing facility
