NRMCA’s Lionel Lemay moderated a panel on Environmental Impact Assessment at the Gordon Research Conference (GRC) on Advanced Materials for Sustainable Infrastructure Development in Ventura Beach, CA. The conference is held every two years, alternating between the U.S. and Europe or Asia. The purpose of the conference is to address how material science, structural design and construction methods can be synergistically integrated to meet carbon reduction goals using the latest scientifical technological developments. Sessions discussed binder innovation, mixture proportioning, structural engineering, (de)construction innovation, end-of-life resource management and automation. Collaborative discussions around the latest science to track and reduce embodied carbon were discussed as well as challenges that need to be overcome to implement low carbon infrastructure in practice.

Lemay’s session included three panelists who discussed challenges in assessing environmental impacts from life cycle assessment, building codes, and standards and regulations. Participants included renowned concrete researchers and manufacturers, including several NRMCA members.

Conference details can be found here. For more information, contact Lionel Lemay at llemay@nrmca.org.
