Last week, NRMCA began its advocacy efforts for the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) annual 2026 revision cycle for the 2027 editions of selected NFPA Codes and Standards. Senior Vice President, Codes and Standards, Shamim Rashid-Sumar, participated in the pre-first draft meeting of the Technical Committee on Construction and Demolition (COD-AAA) in New Orleans as a Principal voting member.

The technical committee formed task groups to study various topics for review, including but not limited to construction materials for enclosures and fire separation, safeguarding construction operations for tall mass timber wood structures and safeguarding construction operations for large wood frame structures. NFPA technical committees and panels serve as the principal consensus bodies responsible for developing and updating all NFPA codes and standards.

The NFPA standards development process does encourage public participation in the development of its standards. The deadline for submission of public inputs for the first draft of 2027 editions of NFPA 101 Life Safety Code and NFPA 5000 Building Construction and Safety Code and other referenced NFPA codes and standards is June 4. Interested parties may view more on how the NFPA standards development process works here.
