NRMCA presented Innovations in the Concrete Industry to an audience of concrete producers, architects, engineers, contractors, and construction managers in Omaha, NE, on August 30, reports Manager, Codes and Sustainabilty Programs, Matthew Lemay. The event was the first of a series of planned Materials Summits, each focused on a different building material and organized by the Concrete Leadership Forum (CLF) Nebraska Hub. The summit was co-organized by the Nebraska Concrete & Aggregates Association (NCAA) and hosted at the offices of Hawkins Construction Company.
Lemay, his NRMCA colleague Chris Dagosta, NCAA Promotions Director Jeff Mulder and Phil Smith, designer/associate at DLR Group and a member of the CLF Nebraska Hub, presented the conference which highlighted the increasing trend of using Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs) for concrete. EPDs transparently communicate the embodied carbon building materials and concrete leads all other materials in their widespread adoption and use. EPDs are an essential tool for concrete producers to identify sources of carbon emissions and reduce impacts.
As an EPD program operator, NRMCA assists producers in obtaining product-specific EPDs which report the impacts of individual mix designs from specific concrete plants. In addition, NRMCA is seeking the participation of ready mix producers in the Industry-Wide EPD and Benchmark Report, which equips concrete producers with EPDs for all their plant locations at a low cost.
