NRMCA participated in the 2023 National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) Technical Meeting in Las Vegas on June 22, reports Senior Vice President, Codes and Standards, Shamim Rashid-Sumar. The meeting serves as the culmination of the NFPA code development cycle for the Fall 2022 and Annual 2023 revision cycles and includes in-person debate and consideration of certified amending motions for standards presented.

NRMCA's Rashid-Sumar chaired a task group and worked with other industries to develop several public comments as part of 2023 revisions to the NFPA 5000 Building Construction and Safety Code. Public comments were offered to update the building code provisions for concrete and other building materials based on the 2022 edition of ASCE/SEI 7 Minimum Design Loads and Associated Criteria for Buildings and Other Structures. During the technical meeting, no motions were passed in opposition to the proposed revisions or any provisions impacting the concrete industry.

Rashid-Sumar is a principal voting member of several NFPA technical committees, including but not limited to those on Building Construction, Fire Protection Features, Residential Occupancies and Structures, and Construction and Materials. These technical committees oversee development of NFPA 101, 220, 221, 703 and 5000. NFPA technical committees and panels serve as the principal consensus bodies responsible for developing and updating all NFPA codes and standards. However, the NFPA standards development process also encourages public participation; interested parties may view more on how the NFPA standards development process works here.
