NRMCA Participates in Concrete Contractor Meetings

NRMCA’s Lionel Lemay (building promotion and sustainability) and his colleague Brian Killingsworth (paving promotion) participated in the American Society of Concrete Contractor (ASCC) committee meetings held last week in St. Louis. ASCC represents contractors who install ready mixed concrete projects from parking areas and streets to slabs on grade and structural framing systems. ASCC has several committees to address technical issues, safety and decorative concrete along with paving promotion. NRMCA will also participate on the newly formed ASCC Sustainability Committee and is exploring the formation of a building promotion committee.

One of the most important topics of discussion at many committees, particularly the Technical Committee, is the change to portland limestone cement (PLC) in most markets which has resulted in contractors seeking assistance from the ASCC Concrete Construction Hotline for unexpected issues. NRMCA is working with ASCC and cement suppliers to address these potential issues which reportedly include set time, finishability, strength gain and surface durability. In general, contractors understand that the transition to PLC and other blended cements are key to lowering concrete’s carbon footprint, but are asking for assistance with understanding how the transition may affect their ability to deliver high quality concrete projects.
