NRMCA was well represented at the recent 23rd Annual Maryland Concrete Conference, co-hosted by the Maryland Ready Mixed Concrete Association (MRMCA), Maryland Department of Transportation (MDOT) and the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA). This year’s conference marked the first time that there were three learning tracks, with Private Sector Pavements added to the agenda, complementing the Public Infrastructure and Mid-Rise Buildings tracks.

NRMCA President Mike Philipps joined MDOT Administrator Tim Smith in providing opening remarks. Philipps highlighted NRMCA’s current programs, including Build With Strength, Pave Ahead and Deliver Your Future. He also highlighted NRMCA’s role in the industry’s sustainability efforts, including the Portland Cement Association (PCA) Roadmap to Carbon Neutrality.

Chief Communications Officer Gregg Lewis provided an update on NRMCA’s ongoing partnership with Habitat for Humanity and the goal to help build Habitat homes in each of the 50 states. Lewis also highlighted the project with Habitat for Humanity Chesapeake.

NRMCA Senior Vice President, Local Paving, Phil Kresge gave a presentation focused on the benefits of concrete pavement for parking areas and highlighted ACI 330 as the industry standard for concrete parking lot design. Kresge also facilitated ASCC contractor Dylan Milis of Milis Flatwork to attend as a general session speaker. Milis spoke about his successes with concrete overlays of existing asphalt parking lots and provided some guidance to assuring a quality overlay project. Following the presentation, several individuals stopped by the Pave Ahead table to ask specific questions about ACI 330 as well as about concrete overlays.

In the Mid-Rise Buildings track, NRMCA Senior Director, Building Innovations, Frank Gordon presented Vertical Advantages of Ready Mixed Concrete for Multi-Family Homes and School Facilities. Gordon’s presentation included the recent Chesapeake Village and Microtel projects as local examples.
