At the end of August Jon Hansen, NRMCA senior vice president, local paving, will retire and begin his next phase of life. Jon joined NRMCA as a national resource director in July 2006. Before that he was the director of marketing for the Iowa Ready Mixed Concrete/Iowa Concrete Paving Association promotion partnership. A native of northwest Iowa, he has spent his entire life in the construction industry as a construction company owner, manager and in market development for the industry. Over the last 16 years, Jon has been instrumental in creating opportunities for NRMCA members and boosting bottom lines. But beyond the numbers, Jon has instituted programs and developed practical guides that will last for years to come.

“When it comes to promotion, Jon understood that it can take a long time to see success and sometimes you just have to grind it out,” explains Brian Killingsworth, NRMCA executive vice president, local paving. “One of the first things I remember Jon telling me when I joined NRMCA was that our business was all about forming relationships, listening to understand someone’s needs and then connecting those needs with a solution. Jon is a master at doing that.”

Being a strategic thinker, Jon recognized that concrete overlays of asphalt parking lots was a growth market for ready mix producers and pursued development of a practical users guide for this market. After a decade in publication, the 2nd edition of the Guide to Concrete Overlays of Asphalt Parking Lots was recently published.

“The Guide to Concrete Overlays of Asphalt Parking Lots has been an important educational resource for the industry. The step-by-step guide helps designers and owners understand how to implement overlays for a sustainable, durable and economical parking area. Keeping this guide current with the latest technology and advancements was an easy decision,” said RMC Research & Education Foundation Chairman Rodney Grogan of Dunn Investment Company. "Jon brought this same enthusiasm and thought process to the trails market where he oversaw development of the Guide to Concrete Trails which was published in 2019. Both guides have brought millions of dollars to the ready mix industry."

Jon has formed many long lasting relationships across the industry and at NRMCA. We wish him the very best as he enjoys a very well deserved retirement.

You may send your well wishes to Jon at jhansen@nrmca.org.
