Aldi Supermarket Chain Announces 2022 Store Expansion Plan

The Aldi supermarket chain announced last week plans to add 150 new U.S. stores following its 100-store expansion in 2021. The 2022 store expansion will be focused in the Gulf Coast area, with the completion of a 564,000-square-foot distribution center in Loxley, AL, later this year, according to a recent article published by the trade magazine Supermarket News. The distribution center will supply 100 new stores in Louisiana, Alabama, Mississippi and the Florida Panhandle. The German-based company currently operates more than 2,100 stores in the United States.

“Aldi has used concrete paving in recent years for its new store designs, which feature a barrier-free transition from parking lot to store entrance,” reports Jon Hansen with NRMCA Pave Ahead. “This design is enhanced when concrete parking lot paving meets the store entrance concrete walkway by not having the typical elevation offset at this transition when dissimilar materials are used. Ready mix producers and contractors need to take the initiative to watch for local store construction and be sure the concrete parking lot option is selected.”

Aldi’s U.S. operations are based in Batavia, IL. Its first U.S. store was opened in Iowa in 1976. See more on store history here. For more information and Aldi concrete paving examples, contact Jon Hansen at jhansen@nrmca.org or any member of the Pave Ahead team.
