Colorado Golf Course Concrete Overlay Project Wins Paving Award

The Thorncreek Golf Course Parking Lot Concrete Overlay Project recently received the 2019 Award for Excellence – Best Portland Cement Concrete Overlay, American Concrete Pavement Association, Colorado – Wyoming Chapter. The City of Thornton adopted a street rehabilitation program in 2015 and a component of this program was rehabilitating municipal parking lots throughout the city. The parking lot at Thorncreek Golf Course (shown here) became part of this program when the city closed the golf course for over a year and invested over $7 million in a major facelift of the entire facility. With assistance from NRMCA, Dave Gray, GCC of America, and Leonard Velasquez, SLV Quality Concrete, city engineers designed a thin concrete overlay over the existing deteriorated asphalt.

A life cycle cost analysis demonstrated that the concrete overlay would cost slightly less than removing and replacing the asphalt initially and would provide significant savings to the city over a 30-year life. SLV Quality Concrete paved the 10,000 square yard lot with a 3D laser screed and overlaid 2,300 linear feet of concrete curb, completing the project in six weeks while maintaining access to the facility for deliveries associated with the renovation. The City of Thornton is looking forward to saving over $110,000 over the next 30 years due to reduced maintenance and rehabilitation costs.
