Heard From the Hill

NPMA staff have continued meeting with key stakeholders on Capitol Hill to discuss our legislative priorities. This week, we met with Rep. Eric Sorensen’s (D-IL-13) office, who is a member of the House Agriculture Committee. During our meeting, we provided staff with background information on our pesticide preemption efforts to-date, and also socialized the importance of including state-level pesticide preemption in the 2023 Farm Bill.

Professional Women in Pest Management (PWIPM) grants, supported by Rentokil Terminix, can advance a career in the pest management industry or help to reduce the costs related to education. Grants are a maximum of $1,000 and include a free registration for PestWorld and an additional $1,000 towards travel expenses to the conference.

In 2023, PestWorld is in Hawaii! The deadline for applications is June 15, and recipients will be notified by July 1. The reimbursement limit for recipients who do not live on O'ahu will be $2,000 for 2023.

March 8 is International Women’s Day and we’re proud to see the pest management industry participate. We strongly believe that sharing examples of successful women in pest management roles could inspire other women to join this changing industry and help close the gap in this male-dominated space. The 2023 theme is #EmbraceEquity. We encourage those in the industry to participate and share on social media using #IWD2023 #EmbraceEquity #WomeninPestManagement and tag us!

The NPMA Women of Excellence Award, sponsored by Target Specialty Products, recognizes women who advance the pest management industry every day, in every way. The international honor is open to women across the pest management industry — PMPs, manufacturers, research organizations, etc. — who demonstrate outstanding leadership and have made notable contributions to the development and growth of the profession, their business, and other women in the industry. Nominations close June 15, 2023.

In honor of Women’s History Month to celebrate the contributions of women throughout our nation’s history, NPMA sat down with three women who have been changing the game in the pest control industry for more than two decades. Although women make up more than 50 percent of the labor force, they are significantly underrepresented in the skilled trades. In fact, women comprise just six percent of pest control workers, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

The Impact Awards, sponsored by FieldRoutes, honor and celebrate exceptional women at all levels within the pest management industry, in any role, including management, technical/service, sales, or office staff. The deadline for nominations is March 8, 2023, and recipients will be recognized at the 2023 Women's Forum, May 9-11, 2023, in Charleston, SC.

It’s time to get involved in your industry’s association and contribute to the strategic leadership and decision-making process of NPMA. Get involved in our committees and interest groups! Legislative Day will be a great opportunity to learn about what’s involved in our committees as they’ll be open to all members.
